Niokolo-Koba
Niokolo-Koba gave the brand its name. It became a national park in 1954 and a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1981: 913,000 hectares of wooded savannah and gallery forest in south-east Senegal. The Gambia River crosses it, on its way from Guinea to the Atlantic, and hippos live in the river. The Derby eland is the largest antelope in the world, and its western form survives in the wild nowhere but here. UNESCO took the park off its list of World Heritage in Danger in July 2024, after seventeen years.
The design
The back print is an inventory, not a scene. The objects of one place float apart on the fabric, each one cut out with nothing behind it: one large subject in the middle, seven to twelve smaller ones around it, and the name of the place above in tall hand-drawn capitals. The Niokolo logo goes on the front, at the heart, small.
The tee
A straight unisex cut that falls clean, without being fitted. 100% cotton, 170 to 180 g/m², knitted from open-end yarn. The body is tubular, so there are no side seams. Neck and shoulders are taped, and the sleeves and the hem take a double seam. Sizes S to 3XL, one price from the smallest to the largest. Five colours: White, Black, Natural, Navy, Dark Chocolate. Natural is not dyed. The dark flecks in the fabric come from the cotton, not from a fault. White reads slightly off-white.
Made to order
Every Niokolo piece is made once the order comes in, one at a time. Nothing is held in stock, and nothing gets made that no one asked for. One price across every size, from the smallest to the largest.
Niokolo is a clothing and wall-art label built on African heritages: one chapter per country, ten places per chapter, and a hippo born in the Gambia River doing the travelling. Chapter 1 is Senegal. Wear your roots.
